I have to admit that I had never really read the blog Seriously, So Blessed until one of you suggested it as a question of the week. Oh, I'd heard of it as I'm sure many of us have. But it was not something that ever appealed to me. That is...until I actually read it.
Seriously, So Blessed is a blog that satirizes the Mormon mommy blogging community. It pokes fun at the perfect world, marriages and families presented in these blogs. It can be hilarious and sometimes borders on mean, but in all it's a pretty dead on spoof.
Honestly, as a LDS woman who blogs about her life, I find a lot of similarities between myself and the character of Seriously, So Blessed. I think that's what makes the blog so popular. Its readers can really relate.
The big question I have is: What does this blog portray about mormon women and families? And is it flattering? What do you think?

You know, I read that blog sometimes and there are some circumstances that I can relate to like I'm LDS, I'm married, I have children, my husband is in school (but not for long), and I blog. That's about it. I think it's funny but I don't get how this person has soooo much time to spend on this fictional blog! I can hardly find the time to do an actual real life blog.
I think it's pretty funny. Yeah, it borders on offensive sometimes (which can be annoying) but I think that church members (like myself) need to have some sense of humor about ourselves. We aren't all like that girl in the blog but I have met some who are. And aren't we a "peculiar people"? I didn't grow up in Utah and I was in the minority and was thought of as weird because I was Mormon. This is nothing new.
It's just a blog. I'm not concerned about it. I hope that people don't just come to conclusions about LDS women because of this blog. I can assure you, not all LDS women are like that! And most of us actually know how to spell!
Just read it for the first time. I gotta say, it's freaking obnoxious. I definitely think (Utah) Mormons often take themselves way too seriously and often portray their lives to be perfect and it's good to poke fun at ourselves. In fact, I'm the kind of person who likes to kinda irk people like that by saying damn or something. But this blog is so annoying. I could barely read the whole page. I think it could be way funnier and more true if a) she spelled things correctly and b) didn't make her character such a bimbo. Even when I read blogs of women who portray their lives to be so perfect they don't across sounding like idiots to me. However, I'm not concerned what nonmembers will think when they read that. They'll either realize it's a joke or just stop reading because it's so annoying.
I actually really enjoy reading the blog because she pokes fun in a lot of areas that but me about blogging, so it gives me some comic relief! Sometimes when I read other people's blogs, I start to feel bad about myself like I am not as talented or whatever and I love that she makes fun of people who like brag versus blog!
This is the funniest blog in a long, long time. Good satire is hard to come by and she is so dead on in most of her stuff (the homonym problems, the "I don't know HOW we got pregnant," the tags, the wives clubs, the reasons she loves being YW advisor, everything). I think it's a huge SERVICE to LDS women by helping us see what's so ridiculous about being shallow and competitive. I always save it to read it last in my google reader after I read all my friends' blogs. I love them but need the comic relief after.
I read it and I think it's funny. Realistic? Not at all. But funny. "TAMN" seems more like a character from Clueless than a Mormon mommy to me. The author of Seriously So Blessed seems a little bitter and judgmental of others. I can't imagine having my life revolve around the "next funny post" I was going to write. But like I said, I read it all the time and I think it's funny! I personally wouldn't want to send the wrong message to people investigating the church by being the author of a blog like that.
I love it! I find it even more funny after a Super Saturday!
I actually heard her on the radio and she is a Mormon mommy herself as well as a grad student. It started as just something to entertain her friends and all the sudden she's gotten half a million hits. I can't blame her for keeping it up, she probably makes a bundle on advertising!
I think it's pretty funny, I wish she's put up a link or something to the church's official website though in case some non member got on there and got the wrong idea. There's probably reasons why she doesn't do that which I am not aware of.
I must be slow, but I had never heard of this before. I started to read it and, just to make sure, everything is fictional? Where can we learn about the real person? I'd love to know what she's like.
I think it's funny, but she gets obnoxious...
She is totally anonymous. You won't learn anything about her in real life unless you know her personally. The blog wouldn't be as good if we knew all about her.
Oh yeah, it's 100% made up
I thought it was funny that the O.P.'s question was "Is it flattering?" Of course it's not flattering - it's making fun of mormon housewife bloggers. But funny, yes. And like someone else mentioned, I'm sure she's laughing all the way to the bank.
honestly? i have kicked myself for not thinking the idea! She's probably paying for grad school through this blog. haha!
The first time I read it, I didn't quite get that she was joking and I thought it was all serious. When I read it again I thought it was hysterical!! I don't think she is bitter at all. It's satire. It's exaggerated to be sure. But it definitely based on real life.
She's joking but there is some truth to what she's joking about. I know people who have done or talked just like the character in her blog. I myself find it incredibly difficult to post anything but positive things on my blog about my family. Isn't this exactly what Seriously, so blessed does? I didn't even realize it until I had started reading it. It really made me take a step back and say Wow, what does this say to the world about me and my religion?
I don't care if it's obnoxious or if you think she has too much time to spend on her blog. DO YOU REALIZE HOW MUCH MONEY SHE IS MAKING??? If I made that much money on my blog, I would "waste my time" on it too!! She is banking so much it's not even funny! Seriously!
I think part of why it's so successful and why it's gotten so popular so fast is because it's very, very clever. I think anyone could post once or twice and make fun of some stereotypes, but her tone and consistency is dead-on and very clever. Props to her. She deserves to make some money with all the traffic she's pulling. I think it's really insightful. Makes me realize how easy it is to be shallow or to come across really materialistic and judgmental. Brilliant commentary. Go TAMN!
